The reference center is a central knowledge hub.

The National Reference Center for Post-Viral Syndromes began operations on September 11, 2024. It was commissioned by the Federal Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs, Health, Care, and Consumer Protection and, following a call for tenders in Europe and a highly competitive process, was awarded to the Medical University of Vienna (Center for Pathophysiology, Infectiology, and Immunology & Center for Public Health, Department of Primary Care Medicine).

Contract criteria

Knowledge processing of national and international information related to post-viral syndromes and processing/design and provision for treating physicians and for technical and political decisions (literature, flagship projects).

Promotion of national and international cooperation through networking with at least three network meetings and an annual symposium, as well as participation in congresses.

Requested consultation from relevant institutions when participating in studies related to post-viral syndromes. This applies in particular to Europe-wide studies, with the exception of financial support. Own participation in international research.

General exchange of information unrelated to individual cases for healthcare professionals involved in treatment

Development of a legally compliant and accessible website for the provision and dissemination of information to healthcare professionals and affected individuals

Training and continuing education for physicians and other healthcare professionals

Our team

The National Reference Center for Post-Viral Syndromes is a cooperation between the Center for Pathophysiology, Infectiology and Immunology and the Center for Public Health (Department of Primary Care Medicine) at the Medical University of Vienna. The leadership lies with Assoc. Prof. PD DDr. Eva Untersmayr-Elsenhuber and Univ. Prof. PD Dr. Kathryn Hoffmann, MPH.
